Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)

Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a processing technology where electrical discharges or sparks are used to remove material to produce features in a part. Nitinol EDM is a desirable process because removing material doesn’t require any physical contact of a tool with the part, so the material’s superelasticity doesn’t affect manufacturing nor are the desirable mechanical properties altered by the machining process. Resonetics performs both wire and sinker EDM processing of nitinol to enable larger material removal for orthopedic applications while maintaining precision and process control.

EDM Applications

  • Bone staples
  • Bone anchors
  • Drills
  • Plates
  • Suture retrievers
  • Needles with specialty bevels
